DAVE SCHUMAN for
Boundary County Sheriff in 2024

Husband, father and a retired U.S Army Military Policeman for 20 years and currently with Boundary County’s Sheriff’s since 1999.  Being the best qualified candidate for Sheriff, my plans for improving our Sheriff’s Office will be by going into a partnership with the members of this community and address multiple issues.  Some being, crime prevention, drug enforcement, and the safety of our children attending the schools in Boundary County.

Not in typical politician fashion but as a Statesman, I believe that I bring something for all types of people to the table, not in a contradictory manner.  I don’t look around the room and decide what to do or say depending on who is in the area.  I was taught many years ago that a Peace Officer is a noble profession.

When I was making the decision to run for Sheriff, I weighed a lot of factors.  I realize that a lot of times a political campaign comes down to a popularity contest versus a pick of the best qualified.  When I was making the decision to run for Sheriff, I weighed a lot of factors. I realize that a lot of times a political campaign comes down to a popularity contest versus a pick of the best qualified. I have the training and experience to run and properly navigate this office efficiently which in turn assists OUR community in maintaining and improving the quality of life we enjoy in Boundary County..

Since 1979, I have strove to assist, protect and defend all those I come in contact with.  For those that I have dealt with, they would tell you that my word is my bond and it’s not in my practice to dole out lip service.  I have not changed, nor will I change the quality of how I perform my duties.  It’s my closely held belief that, to perform your duties in a fair and equal manner is a must and requires you to approach every situation with that mind set.  The fair and equal concept goes hand in hand with my chosen profession and as being a way of life.

Some of my initial plans will be attacking criminal matters in OUR county from many points of view:

  • One way is through drug enforcement.  It is a proven fact that the majority of burglaries are conducted by drug addicts.  It is normally not your marijuana user, marijuana normally makes a person lethargic or lazy, unlike stimulants such as methamphetamine.
  • Another aspect is through crime prevention programs such as Neighborhood Watch, which can also be a valuable intelligence resource being able to mark and possibly track the criminal elements activity.
  • Increasing our patrol sections, pro-active community patrolling by utilizing trained volunteers and our Reserves will increase our visibility and decrease criminal activity.
  • Increasing quality education or training to all, be it our community or our staff, will greatly assist in our Community Partnership and help OUR overall mission of assist, protect and defend.
  • Team building within the agency and our community.  Such as working each and every call for service as if it is the most important issue on the plate, is paramount.  By using OUR quality control program, sound case review procedures and OUR citizens advisory board OUR improved services to the community will be shown through quality cases going forward for prosecutorial action.  That in turn will most likely increase our jail occupancy.
  • WE WILL OBTAIN STATE CERTIFICATION FOR OUR JAIL.  This is important for a multitude of reasons.  Some being we owe it to our citizenry to reduce the liability that our agency holds by not having a certified jail. Reality is, if our county loses a law suit the monies are obtained through increased taxes or loss of service of some kind.  Our jail does not need to be “club med,” but it needs to be a safe and proper facility for all concerned. Be it the staff, visitors or those incarcerated.

The Boundary County Sheriff Office has a lot of excellent professionals, they just need to be focused in an efficient manner for the betterment of the community.  As a professional, every person you come in contact with requires you to be cognizant of the fact that by position you represent a long history of Peace Officers, some that have died doing the right thing.  You are required to treat this profession well by conducting yourself in a manner fitting with the respect that this position demands.  In turn you must be humble enough to know that you earn that badge and respect every day by your actions, you never demand it.  Inappropriate actions by one badge tarnishes the reputation and good name of all others wearing a badge and is personally and professionally offensive.  There is a special place in Hades for those that knowingly make a mockery of the position and violate the trust of the people that the badge represents.

My passion and respect for my chosen profession takes a close second to the love I have for my family and our country, I realize that there are a lot of groups with different and masked agendas and some that will attempt to manipulate world affairs and their interpretation of the U.S Constitution, preying on weak minded or scared people for that group’s purposes.  Together this community will stand and be the benchmark for others to attempt to reach.

There are a lot of black helicopter spotters and conspiracy theorists that doubt anything and everything.  Even to the point of demonizing different organizations or elements of government such as the Federal Government.  Yes, there are a lot of examples of misconduct by the Federal Government but there are a lot of examples of them doing a good job.  We will do our job and they will do theirs and we won’t have a problem.  If a problem does arise, it will be taken care of quickly and soundly.

As your Sheriff, I will balance all the issues mentioned in this letter without a problem.  It is not something foreign to me just another day of service.  No circus balancing act, just a proven fair and equal concept coming to fruition.  There are many differences of opinions as to what the function of the Sheriff is. What is yours?
